1. Alibaba generates $38.4 bn GMV at Global Shopping Festival
China’s Alibaba Group generated $38.4 billion of gross merchandise volume (GMV) on November 11 Global Shopping Festival in Hangzhou. With more than 200,000 participating brands this year, a million new products were launched, it said.
2. Tommy incorporates 3D design technology in apparel designs
Tommy Hilfiger has announced that 3D design technology is being incorporated into all apparel design teams at its headquarters in Amsterdam. Its spring 2022 apparel collections will be the first to be fully designed using the company’s innovative 3D design platform.
3. Most US consumers fond of physical stores: survey
Despite the rising popularity of online shopping, nearly all consumers (99%) shopped in a physical store in the past 12 months for ease, immediacy, and experience, according to new research conducted by The Harris Poll.
4. Auburn University creates shoe material from green tea
Scientists at the Auburn University have developed a biodegradable material using the by-products of fermented green tea and found that it behaved the same way as leather, without the negative environmental side effects. The material has the potential to be used for making shoes.
5. Global cotton yarn import growing since 2016
Since 2016, global cotton yarn import has been increasing at a modest growth rate. The global cotton yarn import was increased from $10,987.16 million in 2016 to $12,285.94 million in 2018 with a growth rate of 11.82%. The overall cotton yarn import was surged by 5.39% in 2018 over the previous year, according to data from TexPro.
6. Raymond restructures its business for value creation
Raymond Limited, India’s largest integrated worsted suiting manufacturer that offers solutions for fabrics and garmenting, announced the demerger of its core Lifestyle Business into a separate entity that will be listed through mirror shareholding structure. The move is in continuation of the company’s transformational journey of value creation.
7. Khadi gets separate HS code, to boost export
The Indian commerce and industry ministry have issued a separate HS code for khadi to categorize its products in export and segregate those from routine products. Data regarding khadi export earlier used to be under the textile head.
8. Adidas and ISS collaborate, to test footwear in space
Adidas and International Space Station (ISS) are collaborating on product innovation, human performance, and sustainability. The two have unveiled a multi-year partnership to pursue research to improve the future design and engineering for athletes on and off Earth.
9. Ferrari to collaborate with Armani to launch apparel line
Italian sportscar maker Ferrari announced early this week a fashion collaboration with Giorgio Armani to launch an apparel line to be produced in Italy as part of a strategy to derive more value out of its brand appeal. As part of the strategy, it will reduce licenses by half and eliminate a third of the product categories currently available.
